An educational introduction to ten well-known herbs used in traditional Ayurvedic practice.
Ayurveda and herbal traditions
Ayurveda has a long history of using plants in individualized wellness practices. Traditional use does not automatically mean an herb is appropriate for everyone, so context and dosage matter.
1. Ashwagandha
A well-known herb in Ayurvedic tradition, commonly discussed in relation to vitality and stress support.
2. Amla
Indian gooseberry is used as a food as well as in traditional preparations and is naturally rich in vitamin C.
3. Tulsi
Holy basil is widely used in Indian households and traditional wellness practices.
4. Shatavari
Shatavari is a classical Ayurvedic herb traditionally used in a range of restorative formulations.
5. Giloy
Giloy, or Guduchi, has a long history in Ayurveda. It should not be assumed to be risk-free simply because it is herbal.
6–10. Brahmi, Neem, Turmeric, Ginger and Licorice
These plants appear in traditional practices and everyday foods in different ways. Their uses, evidence and safety profiles differ, so avoid treating them as interchangeable remedies.
Use herbs responsibly
Herbs can interact with medicines and may be unsuitable during pregnancy or for certain medical conditions. For therapeutic use, consult a qualified healthcare professional rather than self-prescribing concentrated products.
