Learn how to build a practical high-fiber plate with fruits, vegetables, whole grains and pulses for digestive wellness.

Why fiber matters

Dietary fiber supports normal bowel function and helps make meals more filling. Increasing fiber gradually is usually more comfortable than making a sudden large change.

Fill half the plate with vegetables

Use a mix of cooked vegetables, salads and seasonal produce. Bhindi, carrots, peas, beans, gourds and leafy greens are easy options for Indian meals.

Add whole grains

Oats, whole-wheat roti, brown rice, millets and other minimally processed grains can contribute useful fiber.

Include pulses and legumes

Dal, rajma, chana, lobia and sprouts are convenient vegetarian sources of fiber and protein.

Choose whole fruit

Guava, pear, apple, orange and papaya can be useful whole-fruit choices. Keep edible skins when appropriate and hygienically washed.

Do not forget water

Fiber works best with adequate fluids. Increase water intake alongside fiber and stay active. Persistent constipation, pain, bleeding or unexplained weight loss should be assessed by a healthcare professional.
